Conventional Vertical Lathes

KNUTH USA’s vertical lathes are used in a variety of industries ranging from pump repair and maintenance to aerospace. Able to turn workpieces with a diameter as small as .06 in, these machines are great for very heavy or asymmetrical parts. KNUTH USA’s vertical turret lathes can finish or bore the inside of complex pieces of industrial machinery, as well as machine the exteriors. Built with heavy construction, servo motor technology, and a highly variable feed with the vertical boom, these lathes are versatile and up to any task.

FAQ's

A vertical lathe – also known as a vertical turning lathe (VTL) or vertical boring mill (VBM) is a large machine used for heavy-duty machine work involving medium and large parts. They are consequently used in a variety of industries, including aerospace, energy, and mining, as well as construction. Examples of components made by a vertical lathe include brake discs and pump housings.

Vertical and horizontal lathes are made of similar component parts, but differ in a few key ways: as one would expect, a vertical lathe has a vertically mounted spindle, while a horizontal lathe has a horizontally mounted spindle. Similarly, the machinist moves up and down when using a vertical lathe, while they move laterally when using a horizontal lathe. Vertical lathes are also better for larger diameter parts that aren’t too long, while horizontal lathes are better for longer parts of narrow diameter. Vertical lathes use gravity to their advantage to keep their workpiece clean during machining.

Purchasing a KNUTH USA vertical lathe isn’t just purchasing a machine– it’s also purchasing best-in-class customer service.
