A vertical lathe – also known as a vertical turning lathe (VTL) or vertical boring mill (VBM) is a large machine used for heavy-duty machine work involving medium and large parts. Vertical and horizontal lathes are made of similar component parts, but differ in a few key ways: as one would expect, a vertical lathe has a vertically mounted spindle, while a horizontal lathe has a horizontally mounted spindle. Similarly, the machinist moves up and down when using a vertical lathe, while they move laterally when using a horizontal lathe. Vertical lathes are also better for larger diameter parts that aren’t too long, while horizontal lathes are better for longer parts of narrow diameter. Vertical lathes use gravity to their advantage to keep their workpiece clean during machining.
